If you’re a relatively health-conscious human there is a good chance that you’ve tried Bulletproof Coffee - the buttery drink that satiates hunger, increases energy and tastes surprisingly good. I’m sure at first, the idea of blending grass-fed butter and MCT oil into your coffee sounded pretty strange, maybe even downright gross. Although, being an open-minded individual, you decided to give it a try anyways. After trying Bulletproof Coffee I think we can all agree that as weird as the concept is, blending fat with coffee is actually a really great combination.
After the idea of Bulletproof Coffee grew on me, it quickly became a part of my morning routine. I probably made at least one cup of it every morning for about a year. During this year long experiment however, I began to realize a few inconvenient truths about Bulletproof Coffee.
The Problem with Bulletproof Coffee
The first major issue I had with making this buttery drink with that it was inconvenient. I had to buy all the ingredients separately, cut a slab of butter off the brick every morning, measure out the MCT oil, and the only place I could have it was at home because I needed a blender to make it.
Another issue I experienced had to do with the MCT oil. MCT oil is notorious for causing painful stomach cramps and quick onset diarrhea, otherwise know as “disaster pants.” You’re suppose to build up your tolerance slowly but if you add even a teaspoon more than you should have, things can quickly get ugly.
Lastly, I realized that Bulletproof Coffee had very little nutritional value as well as an absurd amount of calories. It contains under 5% of the RDA (recommended daily value) for every nutrient with the exception of vitamin A and can contain over 400 calories per cup.
Since I loved the idea of blending fat into coffee, I took it upon myself to try and make something that was similar to Bulletproof Coffee except more convenient, easier on your stomach, more nutritious, and better tasting. This is what lead to the creation of Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix. What makes Level Up Coffee different from Bulletproof Coffee is that instead of using grass-fed butter and MCT oil for its main ingredients, Level Up Coffee uses coconut oil and raw cacao powder. Here are 11 Reasons Why Level Up Coffee is Far Superior to Bulletproof Coffee.
1. Level Up Coffee is WAY More Convenient
Instead of having to make your high-fat coffee from scratch every morning, Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix is already made for you and is conveniently stored in a glass jar that does not need to be refrigerated. By having a pre-made mixture you’ll not only get consistency, but you’ll also be able to save yourself a ton of time and effort in the mornings.
2. No Blender Required
One of the most annoying aspects of Bulletproof Coffee is that you need a blender to make it. And if you’ve ever tried to stir butter, MCT oil, or coconut oil into your coffee with a spoon, you know that it doesn’t really work - you just end up with floating fat globules on top of your coffee. One major advantage of Level Up Coffee is that you don't need a blender to make it. All you have to do is add a serving of Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix into a leak-proof travel mug with hot coffee, give it a good shake and enjoy!
3. Level Up Coffee is Portable
Bulletproof Coffee requires a refrigerator for the butter and a blender to make it, so the only place you can have it is at home. Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix does not need to be refrigerated and you don't need a blender to make it, which makes it very portable. You can leave a jar at work, bring it in your backpack or purse to school, or take it with you when you travel. As long as you have your Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix, a leak-proof travel mug and access to coffee, you can enjoy Level Up Coffee everywhere you go!
4. Level Up Coffee Has Far Less Calories
One of the big knocks against Bulletproof Coffee is that it has very little nutritional value and it contains a frightening amount of calories. One Bulletproof coffee can contain over 400 calories! Level Up Coffee on the other hand contains only 80 calories. If one of your goals is weight loss, Level Up Coffee is the logical choice.
5. Level Up Coffee Contains WAY More Antioxidants
Raw cacao contains the highest amounts of antioxidants compared to other foods that have also been tested, which includes pomegranates and wild blueberries. Raw cacao also contains very high amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids. These plant based compounds play an important role in improving one's health as they have been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
6. Level Up Coffee Enhances Mood and Cognitive Functions
Raw cacao is rich in unique antioxidants known as polyphenols and flavonols which have been shown to enhance mental clarity and mood.
A randomized, placebo-controlled trial was done on 72 healthy middle-aged individuals to find out if the polyphenols in cocoa enhanced mood. After 30 days of consuming a high dose polyphenol cocoa drink, participants reported a significant increase in self-rated calmness and contentedness relative to placebo.
The flavonols in cocoa were also tested in a double-blind randomized study done on 90 elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment to find out if there would be any significant cognitive improvement. The study found significant improvements in cognitive ability in participants who consumed the high flavanol cocoa drink compared to the low flavanol drink. They demonstrated that the regular consumption of cocoa flavanols might be effective in improving cognitive function in elderly subjects with mild cognitive impairment.
In a similar randomized, single-blinded study, 30 healthy adults were given either dark chocolate containing 720 mg of cocoa flavanols or an equal quantity of white chocolate with a one week interval between testing sessions. They discovered that the groups that consumed the dark chocolate had significant improvements in visual and cognitive function.
A systematic review was done to investigate the effects of chocolate on cognitive function and mood. “Eight studies (in six articles) met the inclusion criteria for assessment of chocolate or its components on mood, of which five showed either an improvement in mood state or an attenuation of negative mood.
Regarding cognitive function, eight studies (in six articles) met the criteria for inclusion, of which three revealed clear evidence of cognitive enhancement (following cocoa flavanols and methylxanthine). Two studies failed to demonstrate behavioral benefits but did identify significant alterations in brain activation patterns.”
Although cocoa by itself seems have a positive effective on mood and cognitive function, what happens to cognitive abilities if you were to combine cocoa powder and caffeine, like you would in a Level Up Coffee? Well it turns out that researchers have actually tested this very combination.
"Researchers from Clarkson University and the University of Georgia studied the effects of caffeinated and non-caffeinated brewed cocoa on attention span, motivation to perform cognitive work, and feelings of anxiety, energy, and fatigue. Their results, published in BMC Nutrition, showed the combination of fatigue-fighting coffee and anxiety-reducing cocoa was the best combination for boosting attention span"
"The authors concluded that cocoa alone increases blood flow in the brain, boosting cognition and attention span, and that coffee, a well-known stimulant, when drunk alone can increase anxiety. Together, however, the caffeine and cocoa boost attention span, while the cocoa also acts to reduce the caffeine’s anxiety-inducing effects, meaning a mocha should be your go-to drink when you feel you're starting to flag."
These studies all used cocoa, which is a more processed and less nutritionally potent version of what Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix uses, which is raw cacao powder. Although more research is need to figure how exactly cocoa enhances mood and cognitive abilities, I think it’s safe to say that raw cacao powder is indeed a superfood that would be advantageous to consume on a daily basis.
7. Level Up Coffee will not cause“disaster pants”
If you’ve ever used MCT oil you probably know what I mean when I say “disaster pants.” Disaster pants is a commonly known side effect of consuming too much concentrated MCT oil. There are actually four types of MCT oils. Caproic acid (C6), Caprylic acid (C8), Capric acid (C10), and Lauric acid (C12). Coconut oil contains all four types of MCT oils, but concentrated MCT oil (which is recommended for Bulletproof Coffee) only contains C8 or C8 and C10. C8 and C10 are known for their energy boosting qualities, but it’s not without consequence. If you consume even a teaspoon more than your body can handle, it can cause painful stomach cramps and severe diarrhea.
Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix takes a more wholesome approach by using virgin coconut oil, which is still made up of 62% MCT oils but won’t cause stomach pain or diarrhea.

8. Level Up Coffee tastes WAY more delicious and comes in multiple flavours
In my opinion, Bulletproof Coffee does taste rather good, although the idea of butter flavoured coffee is still pretty unappealing to most people. Level Up Coffee is a lot more inviting and is undeniably more delicious! To get an idea of what Level Up Coffee tastes like, first imagine the taste of a rich and creamy dark chocolate mocha latte. Now imagine that that decadent mocha latte comes in five amazing flavours, which include Dark Chocolate, Cinnamon, Chile Mocha, Dirty Chai and Turmeric Spice.
9. Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix is WAY more versatile
Although Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix was originally designed for coffee, that's not all it can be used for. Other uses include:
10. People won’t think you’re a total weirdo
Do you remember the confused looks and raised eyebrows of everyone who you first told that you were putting butter in your coffee? I know I do. Don’t let your love of fat and coffee turn you into a social outcast.
11. Level Up Coffee is for everyone!
Level Up Superfood Coffee Mix uses sugar-free, high-fat, plant-based ingredients. This means that everyone can Level Up their coffee, including people who are on a Vegan, Paleo and Ketogenic diet.
Although Bulletproof Coffee was one of the first to introduce people to the benefits of blending healthy fats with coffee, the truth is that it's inefficient. Level Up Coffee, on the other hand, is everything you love about high-fat coffee, except more convenient, portable, more nutritious, easier on your stomach, better tasting, more versatile, and it comes in multiple flavours!
